The Changelings :Astronomica (CD - Middle Pillar/Audioglobe, 2002). Dopo essersi fatti conoscere e apprezzare su innumerevoli compilation ho finalmente il piacere di ascoltare un disco dei Changelings. Astronomica è il quinto album del gruppo americano, un disco dolce e romantico in cui atmosfere ethereal si mescolano a quella darkwave ricca ed eclettica che dall'altra sponda dell'Atlantico sembra aver preso particolarmente piede (basti pensare ad alcuni gruppi Projekt come i Mira o i Lowsunday): il risultato è al contempo delicato ma corposo e potrà quindi piacere ad un numero consistente di ascoltatori, dagli appassionati delle heavenly voices ai fan del rock. A quest'ultimi farà piacere notare i toni di psichedelia sixties che compaiono in alcuni brani (ad esempio "Parallax" o la cover di "See Emily play" dei Pink Floyd), che dimostrano l'apertura dei musicisti verso svariate influenze sonore. La bella ed elegante voce di Regeana Morris si posa sulle dolci e fluidi melodie del disco, che mescolano i suoni delle tastiere a quelli delle chitarre e degli archi, violino e viola, sempre ben presenti. Gli strumenti acustici si sposano quindi alla perfezione con le tastiere elettriche ed è poi da citare l'ottimo lavoro di Chandler Rentz alle percussioni che costruisce pattern ritmici efficaci, raffinati e mai banali. L'atmosfera generale di questo Astronomica è quindi quello di una musica estremamente sensuale, notturna e oscura quanto basta ma anche ricca, languida e un pelino onirica. Pregevoli sono gli arrangiamenti dei brani, che mettono in evidenza il talento esecutivo dei membri del gruppo mentre si cimentano con svariati strumenti: ascoltate ad esempio "Veils of god" con le sue influenze arabe, oppure "Mata Hari" impreziosita dal suono del dulcimer che materializza d'incanto il fantasma degli Stranglers o la languida eleganza di "Orbit", un brano che rimanda ai migliori Cocteau Twins.
