THE CHANGELINGS liefern mit ihrem vierten Longplayer ein Album, das fulminant beginnt: Elegische Violinenbögen und treibende Percussion; füllige, barocke Flächenklänge aus glockenartigen Keyboards und Saitenpsychedelik. Dazu trällert eine durch Effekte zum Chor aufgeblasene weibliche Stimme in seltsam gebrochenen Melodien. Ein bißchen bombastangehauchter, postpsychedelischer Gitarrenpop der 80er Jahre 4AD -Ära, ein bißchen vom Nihilismus der STRANGLERS , ein bißchen narrativer Feengesang aus der Märchenwelt von Hexen und Nebelgestalten.
Jeder Song ist sein eigener Kosmos. Das Album selbst ist dramaturgisch so aufgebaut, daß es von der kompakten Dichte der ersten drei Stücke über invokative antike Ekstase in "Veils Of Gold" in ruhigere Gefilde gleitet. Der Gesang steht stets als bestimmendes Element im Vordergrund, wirkt allerdings im Mittelteil leicht nervend. So gelangt der Astronaut nach einer Reise im "Hypersleep" auf den "Olympus Mons" , den mit seinen 26 Kilometern höchsten Berg des Mars, wo philosophisch eine Zwischenbilanz gezogen wird: Wie weit bin ich gekommen? Wohin führt der Weg? Die Antwort bleibt ernüchternd, folgt dem Flug zu den Sternen statt einer Vision doch ganz reversiv eine Coverversion des PINK FLOYD Songs "See Emily Play" - was man der Band als Reminiszenz an ihre musikalischen Wurzeln zugestehen mag, doch wer will dafür eine CD kaufen? Zwar muß man konstatieren, daß es den CHANGELINGS gelingt, zwischen den alten psychedelischen Rockmonstern und ihrem eigenen Material musikalische Parallelen hörbar zu machen. Gleichwohl ist die stilistische Konzeption in der Fusion von Psychedelik, Romantik und Barock außergewöhnlich kreativ und funktioniert sehr gut. *182304*
