CHANGELINGS (The) - Astronomica
Malgré une carrière bien étoffée –six albums ou presque en 7 années d'existence–, The Changelings (à l'origine des nouveau-nés du petit peuple, Korrigans le plus souvent, substitués à des humains) ne bénéficie pas de toute la reconnaissance qu'il mériterait avec son folk heavenly des plus originaux. Astronomica, un concept album sur l'espace intersidéral truffé de métaphores, s'éloigne quelque peu du genre éthéré pour mettre en avant des aspects plus folks voire rocks. Ainsi, "Olympus Mons", où la délicieuse Regeana Morris cède le micro à Damon Young –excellent par ailleurs– n'est pas sans évoquer Prefab Sprout ou Pink Floyd, dont le "See Emily Play" fait d'ailleurs l'objet d'une jolie réexpression. "Parallax", tragique journal de bord spatial, lorgnerait même, toutes proportions gardées, du côté de Placebo !
Astronomica reste bien entendu dominé par le subtil violon de Paul Mercer qui donne des accents slaves particuliers à la musique ("Mata Hari", "Outrun Your Fears") mais aussi des ailes à la voix cristalline de Regeana, sur les plus jolies pièces de l'album ("Departure", "Orbit"). Globalement, Astronomica relève le pari de satisfaire le noyau des fans tout en s'ouvrant à de nouveaux horizons galactiques.

THE CHANGELINGS - Astronomica
Although having already released close to six albums since their formation seven years ago, The Changelings have not received all the credit they deserve for their particular heavenly folk. Astronomica's is a concept album full of metaphors and whose main theme is intergalactic space. It somewhat drifts away from an ethereal genre in order to prioritise folk and even rock influences. Hence "Olympus Mons", where the delicious Regeana Morris leaves the vocals to the excellent Damon Young - that song bears a resemblance to Prefab Sprout and Pink Floyd. Pink Floyd's "See Emily Play" is by the way also nicely revisited on this album. Hence again "Parallax" - a kind of tragic logbook in space - is a song that even sounds slightly like Placebo! Of course Astronomica is primarily led by Paul Mercer's violin. It is subtlety played and gives an Eastern European feel to the music ("Mata Hari", "Outrun Your Fears"), but it also releases the crystal-like voice of Regeana on the nicest tracks of the album ("Departure", "Orbit"). Astronomica has succeeded in the challenge it faced: please the established fans, as well as open up new intergalactic horizons.
